How To Paint Glass Bottles in Watercolor {LIVE Fridays!} Video Lecture | Master the Art of Watercolour Painting (English) - Art & Craft

all right can everybody hear me clearly
yes yes hi Lindsay and yes I lived on a
summation point I see it okay so people
can see and hear you Oh wonderful okay
today we are going to paint this it is a
glass bottles in with a really really
strong light source so we have a lot of
a lot of color being thrown through the
light onto the table I'm going to show
you the reference photo that I found on
paint my photo and the link is in the
video description if you want to print
off a copy for yourself
it's a gorgeous photo and I also have
the pattern on my website and there's a
link in the video description to that so
you can transfer it on so I'm going to
share some tips for transferring your
design first last week the beginning of
my video got cut off on on the replay so
I just want to make sure that if
anything does get cut off that the
actual painting does not so we'll just
talk about this for a couple minutes and
then jump into the painting so here I
have my transfer already on it's pretty
light so you might not be able to see it
that well but what I do and I'm going to
transfer a picture as I will put it down
on my paper and then a 5ne like really
um symmetrical lines like I know it's
supposed to be perfectly vertical or
horizontal I'll use like a drawing
triangle or a t-square or something to
make sure that I have it lined up with
my edges and it just I make it easier
for framing later on if you're starting
off with a squared up drawing and then I
take some painters tape or you can use
washi tape any low-tack tape and I just
press it I just kind of tape it so I can
hinge it and then I put my transfer
paper dark side down underneath and that
way if I have to lift up and take a peek
and see if it's transferring I can do
that without it moving and this is a
graphite paper I'm using this is my
royal and langnickel you get a really
huge sheet it's um this was $3.59 is for
an 18 by thirty-six sheet
I cut some pieces smaller and I have
them in my to-go bag when I'm teaching
so students can use them and I still
have a really large piece left over for
doing stuff here and honestly this will
last you years so you don't have to you
can keep using it and using it using it
over and over again alright
we are going to begin oh I'm going to
show you options this is what we're
going to paint today I'm going to do the
background last because it does require
some drying time so if you don't want to
do the background you can stop at that
point that I will be giving you options
throughout the time and I see I'm not a
focus for a second it's got it'll clear
back up um I'll be giving you options if
you're not gonna do the background of
what to do as we go through there's just
a couple things you're not going to be
doing this card was done without the
background and so the only color that I
didn't use in this card that I used in
that card was burnt sienna so just in
case you wanted to know that and also
these are painted with Cottman student
paints you can see they're much paler
than this painted with em Gramm and
company artist quality paints and also I
wanted to mention this video is

cheaper so let's get started we are
going to UM kind of work in different
parts of the canvas so that we don't pay
/ rather so that we don't have our
colors blend around where we don't want
them and we're going to start with a
green bottle here and I want you to just
wet it with clear water and there are
all the colors that we're using are
listed below and you know if you don't
have the exact brushes I'm using you can
use a similar size it doesn't really
matter exactly and if you're slower
painter you can use a smaller campus
such as a watercolor greeting card or
just a smaller piece of watercolor paper
I'm painting on a 11 by 15 Strathmore
400 series watercolor block that's why
my paper is not taped down it's all
bound in all four edges and what you do
when you want to remove it you take a
little knife and you just slice it as
like a little opening and you slide it
all the way around and cut the painting
off and then you have a fresh sheet
underneath so it's really handy they
usually cost a little more than then a
watercolor pad but it's kind of worth it
for the convenience so try to be careful
not to get your water outside of your
lines because the paint is going to flow
wherever the water is and you can kind
of tip it to the light as
to see on camera we can kind of see
where it's wet because I'll be glossy
there you can do that at home to make
sure you've covered everything now I'm
going to use hookers green for this
bottle and my palette is I won't have my
palette visible to you guys so I'm just
going to slide that over a little bit so
I got hookers green you could use SAP
green or Viridian if you don't have
hookers you're just keep using that same
color all the way through I'm going to
add our color only make sure it's a
little bit juicier than that going to
add it around the edges because that's
where your glass will appear to be
darkest because you're looking kind of
through several layers of glass at the
edges on the bottom instead of in the
middle where you're just looking through
the front and the back layer this is our
first wash of color so you don't have
we're not trying to get any detail
really just try to get like an overall
color here as everyone doing in chess
era people are lively today it seems we
have several who are getting over
terrible colds or have terrible colds
thank goodness I've only had one minor
head cold so far this year knock on wood
I hope everyone's feeling better for the
weekend O'Meara yoga my grandmother also
made her own cough medicine whiskey
honey and lemon juice I bet that made
her feel better you may still be sick
but you one cared yeah I'm gonna add a
little bit of lemon yellow in the center
of my bottle here kind of like it's
catching the light OOP something's
falling off the shelf over there
that was me that's right there is wreck
in the craft room there's pretty tight
tight quarters down here my craft room
seems to get smaller and smaller every
year what's up with that um I don't know
maybe it's shrinking maybe hmm
glow my Jean mobile warning hit your
jeans like I don't mind dryer keeps
making my smaller you know I need to get
a new dryer all right I think I've got
this uh I think my bottles a little
wonky over here
I can correct a little bit and wonky is
a technical term yes it is alright we're
going to go over to the big blue bottle
um I'm using a couple different brushes
I'm using some of the mimic brushes from
Jerry's Autorama they're a synthetic a
synthetic kolinsky sable brush and
they're a little bit juicier than a
regular synthetic brush they're really
easy to handle I will tell you though if
you are having a hard time getting your
colors as dark as you want then go to a
regular synthetic because these are
going to hold more water and if you're
not really used to controlling how much
water to paint you get you if you ever
if you have a hard time with your paint
being too light go with a regular
synthetic because you won't carry so
much water first question yep from
Denise a question well the marks from
the graphite paper wash away
um they won't really wash away you can
go in and with an eraser later and
lighten them up but generally where our
marks are here are going to be on the
edges where the colors a little bit more
concentrated so I don't think they're
going to well look look right here I
mean I don't really notice them if you
want you eat a closer look on my blog
but I don't even really see them deal
your person you see them um yeah I mean
if you're looking for them you're
definitely going to see them but if
you're just looking at it you are
definitely not going to notice the lines
um I would imagine you could probably go
F go along after and if there's that
ones lighten them up with a good eraser
with that yeah that way you will use a
light eraser like a white plastic eraser
I'm using ultramarine blue along the
edges of the tall bottle here you can
use cobalt you can actually use whatever
you want but the colors I'm using here
I'm using for a reason you're easy to
lift so we can lift back to our
highlights and they mix well together
and we're using a very limited palette
of just four or five colors Beverly
Mossman is it warm up there I mean well
today for middle whatever it's when I
looked at my outdoor thermometer it was
55 so we're happy
I think Beverly's in Florida so yeah
cold hearse were like winter yeah yeah I
think I think little sticky chicken
might go out go for a sticky chickie
need some fresh air yeah of course icky
chicky she's had a a rough day I
she's well she's walk around with her
mouth open and of course I google it
just like anybody with any illnesses in
our school if you don't feel good don't
go bums you'll they'll tell you you'll
die oh yeah oh yeah so die if you go to
your doctor right now yep you're not
gonna even meet don't bother not gonna
make it to the major bills out today and
take a nap yeah yeah um yeah so I'm
gonna let the marble Emma put in some
alizarin crimson um so the chickens walk
around with smelt open and so I started
googling out why is the chicken doing
I'm honestly thinking the chicken might
have had a stroke or something because
it's just acting very unchic in like I
mean it looks healthy looks perky enough
but just isn't you know fluttering
around like a chicken does like Grandma
yeah does little like maybe some
dementia I don't know chickens might get
dementia and and so I learned about the
state called gape worm so of course I
was convinced so much I can hit gate
worm and um so next time you open his
mouth like I swab the throat like I said
it to on the chicken wheel or no there
was no there was no a little red three
things so I guess gave I guess she's
just hot so I think it's probably about
time for her to go back out she's
probably ready
yeah she's eat some bugs I want to see
you're eating food a little bit better
on her own all right just just try to
keep your edges fairly smooth your
marble might end up a little bigger if
you're like me and you end up getting a
little bit out of one's eye then you
have to overcompensate me other but just
just drip some paint in there and I
think let's see probably a good time to
run the heat tool on this and dry it so
if anybody has any questions pop up in
the chat you can ask me hopefully this
isn't crazy loud I apologize if it is
it doesn't look to be being too loud on
my on my levels there I just want to
ride this up since you go on to the
center bottle any questions not yet
before I got wonder if maybe 500 nice
sleep Kumud this should probably want to
depart so I cut out of his leg do they
want to get so cocky this would be a
perfect time to enjoy a coffee refill
check text message Oh 49 degrees in
upstate New York for actually warmers
Wow oh nice another thing I wanted to
mention if you um if you wanted to do
that reflection on the ground you could
do that while the bottle is wet I saw
those some people had a hard time with
that in our class on Tuesday so I didn't
want to yards I'd keep them separate
because before having probably aluminum
bats watching and stuff well my problem
impatient or not because I took Linda's
classes who they are I noticed my I have
a hard time because the shadow act it
was accurate to the same color it's a
bottle like when I tried to wash it out
and end up being very very light oh I
have to go back and add key blue all
right g GV what made you select these
colors I thought think because they lift
really easily meaning I can remove them
if I make a mistake and they mix
together to make vibrant colors and good
shadows I'm going to go in on the red
bottle and I'm going to brush over the
color that is from the green and the
blue so basically and I'm doing this
with a regular watercolor not my mimics
it's a little too soft with a regular
like aqua on round and I am I'm just
kind of being careful because I don't
want to go beyond my lines and I'm just
softening that color and I'm going to
blot it because if I just pick it read
over this it would turn kind of gray
instead of being vibrant there so I want
I want able to see that there is a
bottle behind there but I don't want it
to kind of be overdone and it's going to
always block never rub just press
straight up and down
and you can do that as many times as you
want I just want to get the extra paint
out of the way and notice like if you're
using a paper like arches you're
unlikely it's going might be a little
easier for this for this painting
because you're unlikely to get blooms so
that's why it's very important you want
to stay within a line here because we're
going to be then wetting our bottle and
putting in color and if you wet outside
of it and that color is going to go onto
the other bottles as well like when we
glaze over I know it's like Strathmore
has a lot more sizing so it's much more
likely to give you blooms so if you're
having a problem with that you could try
an arches or any paper that has more
cotton in it versus on paper pulp and
never rub always block question how
would you do this with watercolor
pencils um I would just very very
lightly color it in like with the edge
of my pencil wash it let it dry and then
I would use the I'll show you I would
use my pen my brush on the tip of the
pencil as a palette and I would bring
over my glazes but for this bottom layer
I would just I would just gently color
it more on the edges with the pencils
and then I would blend it in is anyone
here working with watercolor pencils
doing this tutorial or color pencils
today I don't know we've a couple people
say that they like do they like working
with watercolor pencils I do too
there's such a nice portable medium um
Karen McClure I find pencils she has the
Derwent watercolor pencils are difficult
to blend any ideas for blending them I
have been using coal press 300 GSM paper
and what brand are you using because two
pencils yes your wind watercolor oh no I
mean the paper will paper it just it
doesn't you just
as cold-press she doesn't say what
brands I would say you probably want you
probably would have better luck with a
hot press um like Fabriano makes a
fairly inexpensive one that's pretty
good
this is crimson alizarin crimson by the
way just again we're applying it to the
edges um also I you know you want to
make sure that you're not pressing too
hard and that you're working on dry
paper and then you're adding the water I
use the Derwent watercolor pencils a lot
I have both the watercolor writing pens
and I really like them I you know I but
I have any of the people have like
complain about them so I'm wondering I
mean mine are kind of old maybe they've
changed formulation okay um let's see
Rhonda McGee please explain glazing okay
we're going to get into that a lot a
little bit later but it's putting
transparent layers of paint over over
other layers of paint so you can still
see the original color mm-hmm all right
Edie do you think acrylic is easier than
watercolor and why and our pencils whoop
Chat Chat sorry oh and our pencils the
best way to get started um oh boy well I
don't think it's like necessarily and
easier or hard thing I just think that
some people's personalities go a little
bit better with watercolor versus versus
acrylics like for me I like being ready
to go to paint be painting in a moment's
notice so I don't want to set up a peut
palette I won't have to wash brushes
when I'm done so I prefer watercolors
usually acrylics do give you a lot more
chances to fix a mistake if you have
something on your paper and you um you
decide you don't like it you can paint
over it which is nice so I mean it's
really depends and I'm having coffee
with soy milk and a little bit of sugar
today if anyone's interested in I have
to share this cuz cinnamon I think
sentiments here she'll probably wanna
know what my she is the area Jason okay
and we're going to work on the shadows
too while we're at it and I'm just going
to wet this shadow here now on if you're
a quick painter you could have done
this while that was still wet just drag
the paint right over with a wet brush
but I taught this I taught the card
sized lesson in a class this week Sarah
took the class in a second watercolor
class ever and you know the card it was
alright but it's gonna go stored away
where people won't say oh it was really
you know it's a pretty pretty complex um
thing to do in an hour and a half the
group of people but and that was the
thing I was noticing that they they were
taking too long the bottle by the time
they went over to their shadow it was
back washing and they were getting
blooms so I didn't want anyone to have
that same issue um we have what we have
how-to and DIY Lindsay can you please do
some oil painting tutorials oh I love
oil painting I would love to do some
more it might be a little bit after
Christmas just because time is it takes
me it takes me a day to do an oil
painting tutorial to to film it and sock
it together and upload it so
unfortunately I don't have too many days
before Christmas this time of year is my
busiest time of year so it might have to
be after Christmas we definitely would
like to do some more ways yes you know
February would be a great month when
there's nothing going yeah let's see
what is the difference between
watercolors and acrylics the binder
watercolor binder is um gum arabic and
acrylic binder is an acrylic emulsion
and acrylics um have more body to them
with watercolor your your more just
getting like the thin thin veil of paint
like you want to paint watercolors on a
canvas because it would just like wash
off when you went over it doesn't have a
it has a water soluble binder I'm
wetting my shadow area for the marble
and I'm going to drop in a little drop
of lemon right there right next to the
right next to the edge of the marble I'm
going to move this off and make sure you
can really see that Christian kay don't
dip your brush in your coffee I'll try
not to I would totally do something like
that
or he could see that enough this little
drop a yellow there and then I'm going
to go around that with crimson I've done
that so I've wasted so many cups of
coffee that way because I do have
cadmium colors on my palette so I went
there
know what they're doing they're asking
for some sort of toxic poison yep
just go around it with the Crimson and
what the colors wicked and then I'm
actually going to grab a little bit of
the ultramarine blue mix it in with my
crimson on my palette do you guys find
it helpful to see my palette while we're
working I know it kind of does take up
some of the real estate here but know if
that's helpful or let me know in the
comments and the chat alright and I'm
just adding a little bit of that purple
right along the edge and when that dries
it's going to look pretty natural and
actually our marble is pretty dry so we
can go ahead and mix up a little bit
more of that crimson and blue and we can
just kind of put some squiggly pins on
what can you tell me about gosh hate do
you use it um I don't use it too much
but gouache is a I'm sorry wash up wash
squash and squash yes missile golf
squash wrong to squash em Kinston seven
like seeing the palette oh good gosh is
an opaque watercolor but it has all the
other characteristics being a binder
with gum arabic and you can lift it up
you could put it in a palette like this
and reconstitute it with water generally
if you add white to a painting a
watercolor painting it becomes a gouache
and we are going to do that today
because i think that like the success of
this painting is is greatly improved by
using a little bit of white paint um all
right well we have this color we just um
with that draw really quick mo cuts for
you mm does water color dry quicker than
acrylic ah gosh I think it's about the
same water color is used on paper so
it's going to absorb and air dry so it's
going to dry a little bit through
absorption a little bit through just
your how warm your your air is and also
our acrylic paints don't write the same
rate like a heavier buttery body paint
will stay wet longer and open paint will
stay wet longer so it's kind of
comparing apples to bananas I would say
it's fairly similar
and what rate of watercolor paints do
you use Emma Graham is my favorite
because they're perfect they're they're
designed to be poured into your palate
and let to dry you can do that with any
paints but they work really well and
they come back to life really easily and
how wet to use meet have watercolor well
that is um it depends on the effect
you're going for
just like here where I wanted my paint
to really flow I had that really wet
generally when I'm working I start with
that I start with my area the paint
pretty wet and as I go on to add details
it's going drier and drier as I go and
everybody loves you in your palette
because they like to mix the colors they
okay okay great great
alright what I'm going to do is wet this
little area back here and I had to see I
had to just quickly dry that and if
you're ever wondering if your papers dry
or not just gently touch it with the
side of your hand to the back your hand
if it feels from temperature it's dry if
it feels cooler than room temperature
it's still damp and if you paint over it
you're going to get feathered lines all
right I'm just going to add a little
that hookers green in there and I'm just
going to dab it just let it look kind of
modeled Audria stops in where did lens
you get her palette that is a Jones
palette you can find that Jerry Zarda
Rama I'm not sure if it's linked down
below but if you go to Jerry's
adorama.com and search Jones palette
it'll be there but actually I would
recommend the pike palette if you do a
lot of traveling because it's a little
bit more sturdy and durable the plastic
is thicker it's the same price I have
one of each at the time the Jones
palette was a lot cheaper but now
they're like the same price so that's a
Jones palette but I would reckon the
pike palette and that's Pik II so it's
the same size it's just it's just a
better better quality let's see do you
like watercolors or acrylics better
watercolors is it best to use 300 GSM
paper 300 GSM grams per square meter I
believe is 140 pound which is standard
um that's what I mostly use because when
I get out that 300 pound paper and I you
know think about how much it costs I get
that
um analysis paralysis where I can't
decide what I want hang on this is too
precious
mr. oppression and would it be possible
to 1991
sube sube hi everyone Lindsey would be
possible to do this piece within
inktense pencils yes you can just like I
mentioned to the the ladies asked about
Derwin watercolor pencils just kind of
use a side of the pencil just to glow
kinda like an even color around the
edges like where I put my paint and then
go in with a wet brush and spread it
around and then use the paint like a
palette by like picking up color from
the tip but yeah I love intense and the
color should be perfect for this now I
don't want a harsh edge there so what
I'm going to do is um clean my brush
Joanne creamer is asked me get it posted
on YouTube it will the replay will be
hosted plies yes it will and I do have a
list in the pattern and the reference
link to the reference photo on my
website the link is in the video
description if you want to check that
out um GV can this glass effect be
obtained using in inktense pencils as
they are permanent once they dry
actually even better it's better because
your glazes aren't going to lift up
after you've went down that first but
you will want the white you'll just you
know you won't be able to lift back to
white but it's not a big deal use your
gloss use your white pencil its it'll be
fine

paralysis here so I need your guy's help
okay so I have this gorgeous I've had
this for years
okay it is too precious to paint so I
need some ideas of what to paint on this
I was thinking I could do like a snowman
with a hat or an elf and have it upside
down maybe put it in like an eggcup to
display it or it's an ardent supposed to
hang like that but it's so pretty and I
want to do ornaments next week for a
live Friday so I need I need some ideas
so let me know like especially after the
show in the comments below or in chat if

paint on this I also have these stars
this is actually put you put these
together to make a 3d star which is
really pretty and then I have um I have
some tags here so if you guys have any

so I got to get over my my analysis
paralysis I've had these for way too
long they've been sitting in my drawer
for years and I need to bang them yeah
I'm Sarah Johnson did you go to an art
school and how did you get into crafts
no I went to broadcasting school but I
paid in my whole life so that's kind of
how I got into my family's be crafters
so and PMB 5505 are pencils easier for
beginners
um I think pencils are are easier if you
like to work small or if you're also a
rubber Stamper um maybe if you're a
little timid I I don't know about easier
or harder I think it really depends on
the personality so now we're going to
work on our second layer of color on our
green bottle so I'm just using hookers
green on its own and I am just going to
kind of accentuate some of the UM of the
bits of glass you just want to be kind
of quick and confident with your strokes
here and look how using my brush I'm
kind of using on using it on its side
and then if I want to taper off that
line I'm lifting so just all already
just those three marks really start to
round and flush out the bottle you're
going to be adding more darks you're
going to be adding light so you know
don't worry about this too much this is
you this is a great layer of practice on
because you're going to be covering some
of this up let's see oh somewhere for
the ornament paint it like a beautiful
vintage ornament a wintery Moroccan
print Oh got some ideas I know there's
more I had to do I kind of wish I could
put put links in the in the chat Oh be
nice or I could like see you and if they
have you have an example of like the
patterns and stuff like that let's see
well let's see it looks like an acorn
oh then it come a little deck in a
corner someone to angels snow scene
zentangle doodling oh boy I don't do
much of that under if I'd be able to do
that
spot yeah bet you would you could do it
nativity scene a snow scene with deer or
polar bears this is a glaze by the way
this uh this transparent layer they were
putting on um so let the furnace it's
down no hun snow people oh that would be
kind of Kate Laurel pattern all right
all around let's see I need a bigger I
need a bigger chat screen well it's to
it you can't expand them we're gonna do
the same thing with the blue the blue is
much less um much less prominent I
actually going to switch to a bigger
brush the biggie or item you're painting
the bigger your brush you don't want
it'll keep you from getting those fussy
little lines and um I always suggest use
the biggest brush you can handle anyway
because um it'll teach you how to
control your brush better cuz even this
is a big chunky brush it still comes to
a nice fine point
let's see gorgeous snowflake scene
poinsettias uh winter woods scene
add embellishments needs awesome bling I
need some bling um Carol more I have
prismacolor water charisma watercolor
pencils that don't seem to blend very
well do you have tips on how to blend
liquify the prismacolor yzma's
watercolor pencils and inktense um the
ink tints should liquify pretty well but
is it definately Prisma and not prima
that she's asking about it let me
double-check
she put Prisma okay you know I I love
the prismacolor wax pencils but I really
haven't had much I didn't really bought
a few open stock of the prismacolor
watercolor pencils because I was trying
to decide what I wanted to invest in
before I got the Derwent and I really
didn't care for them that much I found
that they didn't liquify that well it
could have been just a couple of colors
I ordered didn't look a PHY very well
but that was my experience with them but
generally I find if you
use them on the edge of the pencil so
start coloring like straight up and down
you're going on the edge a little bit so
you're getting like a it's just kind of
catching the ridges on your paper
it um then I guess because it kind of
almost shaves off that top layer of
pigment so it's just kind of sitting
there when you add the water it behaves
a lot better that's just been my
experience with with watercolor pencils
in general in tents I haven't had a
problem with you just want to make sure
you don't dent your paper when you're
coloring because then the paper will the
pigment will want to stay there and then
other pigment want to kind of float into
that area um Denise eh I didn't know you
can paint on top of paint in watercolor
I thought you'd get the blues well you
have to let it completely dry first
layer has to be very dry or you will get
blooms and um then you need to go gentle
like so I'm using these mimic brushes
because they're very soft like if I was
using a noil paint or hog brush that
would pick that paint right up you know
because it's gonna it's too abrasive so
see what I'm doing my palette I'm making
sure my ink is like that Maya paints a
consistency of ink loading up my my
brush and then I'm coming over here and
this is just the plain crimson and then
I can layer it lay it down without any
trouble it's not going to pick up the
underneath color right um Debbie
Sundberg talk more talk about glazes
what you're going to be getting into
that later right well yeah we're glazing
right now we're doing our first layer of
glazes our mid-tones um you basically
want to make sure your brush is fully
loaded with um inky juicy color because
you don't have to keep painting it back
and forth once you start painting back
and forth in the same area it's going to
lift you have to be very um definite
with your strokes you have to be very
like kind of brave because you're going
to put it down there and leave it alone
so that's why it's good cuz this you
can't mess up this meeting layer this
you can you're going to be doing a
darker layer you're going to be doing
some lighter you can remove stuff later
so you can't really yours was beautiful
I should have had you bring her words no
that's what hidden away no it was not
bad everyone came okay I wasn't really
impressed with the whole class Holly and
Cardinals for the ornaments oh that
would be pretty
let's see Victorian style beaded
ornament is little a teasing and
watercolor this thing is glazing in
acrylics um let's say with acrylics you
probably want a little glazing medium
because if you add water to your
acrylics if you add too much it can
weaken the bond with the with the canvas
so I think you probably instead of water
is about the same thing but instead of
water you'd be using like a like a gel
medium or a glazing medium to thin it
without weakening it did you run out did
you lose a jet nope nope I just was
getting caught up oh yeah easy to get
behind I know so I'm all caught up yes
people have been very chatty today it's
awesome that is also how many people are
live in the room right now 135 watching
sweet okay well I'm going to put the
background in because most this this
nothing wet is touching it so we're
going to go ahead and do that you do not
have to do this at this stage you can if
you don't want to do the background you
can just have yourself another cup of
coffee
or whatever you want to do but if you
want to do the background make us some
grill has some real good tips because it
took me three tries my background I'm
going to start by moving my paper so
it's a little bit easier for me to get
at and I'm going to use a one-inch
synthetic flat and this is a royal
majestic and on any one inch synthetic I
would use a not a one not a like I'm not
a mimic just because it's going to hold
too much water now on my palette instead
of using color from my wells and that's
what I did the first two tries that I
got wrong
I couldn't get my color rich enough and
I'm using burnt sienna and ultramarine
blue and this is my favorite dark I use
this a lot burnt sienna if you are not
doing this background you're not going
to need burnt sienna on your palette
you're only this if you're going to be
doing the background because then you
need some darker shadows in your bottles
that will be the background color so I'm
mixing these together on my palette
spray a little bit of water and the key
is not to get too much water and that's
why I wanted to go right from the tube
so it's absolutely fine to paint from
youtube if you find that your paints
just aren't as vibrant as you want
like if their student grade you could go
right from the tube how do you decide
where to put the shadows in the bottles
well I do a reference photo I'm looking
I'm looking at but I painted quite a bit
of glass in my day so you kind of get an
idea of how the lights gonna throw
around the shadows all right um see Miss
Selina 1973 do your ornament with the
with your chickens in the snow and add
their names to the back oh okay the cute
little real-life chicken model my
kitchen right now ooh 1991 Chevy Chevy
hey Lindsey any tips for portraits in
watercolors oh um my brush isn't
perfectly clean but it's alright I'm
just going to wet this what this
background before I put the color in
tips for watercolor portraits you know
what there are some excellent watercolor
portraits portrait bucks out there I
would probably recommend picking up one
of them and going through like the
recipes for skin tones and you know
starting with a good sketch of your
subject is really important and
transferring that onto your paper I
wouldn't draw directly on your paper
because you're going to have to erase
and adjust and and that's damages the
paper any any sort of eraser marks that
you paint over it if you if you've done
it too much you're going to get areas
that are going to take the paint more
than others and that's going to give you
that can give you a very unflattering um
color if it's you know you have an area
taking way more paint because you did
you've abraded the surface so you want
to sketch it on a on a piece of tracing
paper and then transfer or use like a
projector to draw it and there's nothing
wrong with that because you're going to
have enough challenges getting through
the painting because portraits are hard
it's really you know in turn you know
you're painting a portrait of a child
and it looks like you know they're in
their 30s because you've got you know
too pronounced of a of a smile line or
or what-have-you so you go the way of
some terrible portrait tattoos I've seen
on the Internet oh man yeah um let's see
Carol more have you ever used
watercolors on canvas oh very unsuccess
yes I thought I I was thinking oh
there's nothing special about federate
Fredrick's water because there's
watercolor canvas and I had some and I'm
like you know what I bet there's nothing
special about this I'm going to use this
you know no-name brand just regular
canvas paper and see what happens and
what happened was my entire painting
slid off of the canvas it and stick so
if you do want to use that you want to
use a watercolor ground daniel Smith
makes that I believe or watercolor
canvas Frederick's makes it and then you
can get those really cool looks you
still need to either seal it with
something or a frame another glass I
would really go with under glass because
it just gives you more protection um but
it's a totally different look it's it's
a fun look it's very painterly not
highly detailed look it's it's if you
want more of a painterly effect I've a
begonia if you want to look on my
channel I think I have a speedpaint of
it and regular when it's just angel wing
but going yeah if you search that you
should find it but that's on the
watercolour canvas okay I now I'm going
to tip my paper so I've got I've got it
raised on the side I'm not sure how that
looks if you can tell the depths there
but and I'm going to add my color right
at the little table line that I sketched
on there and I just that's not on the
pattern because I did I want you guys to
have the option of doing it or not um
and I'm using the chisel edge of my
brush just to kind of trace that line I
just used like a yardstick and I drew
that in with that and I'm just bringing
it up since my paper is wet I'm doing a
wet into wet wash it's gonna help me
blend if I try I tried to do this as a
controlled wash because generally get a
darker color but um it was looking kind
of awkward as I tried to get around the
bottles Carol Moore is the paper
stretched you I know don't talked about
it earlier but I see you don't have it
taped down know by you would want to
definitely tape it down if you're doing
this background if you're not working on
a block I'm working on a block of
Strathmore 400 series and a block is
like it's kind of like a pad of paper
except the like you know the spine where
it's all connected that's on every side
so it's found on every side and it
doesn't tend to buckle too badly when
you paint and then when you're done you
use a palette knife to slide but this
little gap on one of the edges you slide
your knife in that gap and you just cut
that top layer away umm Veselin nico
loves what brush
do you prefer for watercolor there's
several that I really like I like the
royal and langnickel majestic and aqua
lawn this is a majestic I find them to
be very both very comparable oh by the
way if you mess this up paint over it
with water and reconstitute the paint
these are very liftable pigments and you
can like if you got some awkwardness
there just paint right over it the
reason I chose these pigments is because
they are highly liftable and forgivable
these are burnt sienna and ultramarine
blue if anyone didn't catch that Sarah
Johnson do you like to paint from tubes
or from the palette better from the
palette and less than doing a big
background like I am here Chris how do
you store your paintings um I put them I
have a big portfolio it's kind of like a
and like a huge folder the zips up on
three sides and I put them in there
until I'm ready to map them and then I'm
not sentimental with my work so I'm at
them and put them in my shop for sale
and then I try I try to do that
fairly frequently so that I don't have a
ton to do at once but I cut my I do an
framing so I when I have a bunch ready
to go I just cut a bunch of mattes and
usually it for a good show to be on
Netflix and then I'll be binge watching
the met cutting I'm Joanne creamer could
you do some watercolor bookmark videos
well that would be neat that would be
good okay great idea
Christmas or birthday gifts Oh others
Day or Father's Day I like that you know
what I used to when I used to do a lot
of art fairs and festivals before I had
kids and the paintings I own I taught
classes so the paintings I have so many
I only have like you know 25 paintings
of one bird stand of birch trees so I
get sick a looking at them and I would
chop them up into bookmarks and I would
stamp my contact information on the back
and I would give those away free at art
fairs people loved them
Givi do you think watercolors look more
vibrant on hot pressed paper than cold
pressed paper I don't think it really
matters because what happens is you're
working with transparent color the
alight
comes down to the paper goes through
your veil of color and bounces back off
the white paper back into your eyes so I
think as more to do with the paint that
you using um rough paper tends to more
spar it's called sparkles so if you're
out painting like a landscape in here
and you're you know painting water and
you're you're working on dry paper and
you put up like a brush load of blue
paint across there you're going to see
this sparkle because you're going to
just have all those little bits of
grooves in the paper that weren't caught
with the paint so that can look a little
more vibrant generally if you're working
you're doing something really highly
detailed like a botanical illustration
or a portrait use hot press if most
general purpose is cold press and then
like landscapes and stuff are really
great on rough so just match it to
whatever you're doing I don't think
vibrancy really factors in there uh em
workmen for what is the best watercolor
paper for scrapbooking um well it's all
good pretty much all going to be
acid-free I think it's up to your
personal preference if you're doing a
ton of stamping you probably will prefer
a hot press or a fairly smooth cold
pressed paper just so you have that that
option all right I'm going to start
adding some of the darkest shadows in
the bottle um if you're not doing this
dark background for that for the dark
background I'm going to take my color
plus this mix here this prints Hannah
and ultramarine blue that's going to be
because that's going to be showing
through my bottle but if you're not
doing the background what I want you to
do is use um like if it's the green I
want you to use green plus a little
ultramarine blue if you're doing red use
red plus a little ultramarine blue if
you're doing blue use blue plus a little
bit of the alizarin crimson okay so
that's going to give you your dark but
sit but if you have the background if
you did that with me then you want to
add you want to do some shadows with
your main color and this in the upper
parts of the bottle where the darks are
showing through so I'm going to start
with the group with the blue bottle
because that's the simplest and I'm
going to use ultramarine blue and I'm
going to grab some of this dark mix
which is ultramarine blue and burnt
sienna and if you're out of that just
you know grab a little burnt sienna uh
Jane W would like to see remove the
sheet after you're done she seems to
have I'm sure gee she seems to have
problem with ruining edges when she
takes it off her blog oh sure sure what
brand a block is she using
she doesn't say maybe she'll chime in
there let me know what brand you're
using maybe so I think some brands might
be a little easier than others do you
sell your painting I do and you uh Aaron
Lewis asked that Carroll more do you
have a good place to purchase mats
unfortunately no I hate cutting mat so I
cut my own mat because they're crazy
expensive for the amount that I need
Sara Johnson you ever done fundraising
with your crafts well a couple like a
month ago Steve Ramsey from woodworking
for mere mortals did makers care and I
challenged all any youtuber that wanted
to to make a plane and so I painted a
plane and I was lucky enough to sell
that actually to one of the one of the
guys over at Jerry's daughter Emma and I
donated all the proceeds to to make her
scare so it was nice I was able to eat
okay and make $160 donation so I was
feeling pretty sweet about Maya about my
my I don't know I guess ability to give
there because you know I probably have
been able to afford to give $160
otherwise right so that was just like
hey sweet uh Veselin nikola can you use
more of the pear pear less peerless
peerless watercolor I only have a small
pack of those and I have to tell you you
can you can use other other materials um
very similarly to the peerless they're
not my favorite they're peerless do you
know Pere Lachaise don't know they are
and I'm taking that I know it was like
it smelled like pear fruit
I think it's PE ero a misprint oh by the
way I'm using alizarin crimson plus my
my mix here of ultramarine blue and
burnt sienna to make my really dark
darks for this and if you're not doing
the dark backgrounds and just use the
crimson plus a little bit of ultramarine
um if they're kind of like a they're on
paper they're they're originally meant
for photo tinting oh I you might easy no
harder like the stamp show I have yes
yes I know what they are now I've never
used them though yeah they're kind of
neat but
I mean I would not pick them over
watercolor pencils or or watercolor
paints I would you know you could all
you could actually scribble markers on
like an acrylic block and paint with
those and get a very similar effect
they're just not my cup of tea really I
have a little a little book that Beth
from all my artsy Etsy shop made me and
they're fun they're just not what I
would go for worse cuz I like to do lots
of big washes and they're just more for
coloring small images it seems to me I
think you go through him awfully fast if
you were doing a lot of painting in
there they would be quite expensive i

taking that same mix that dark
ultramarine blue plus burnt sienna and I

then I'm grabbing some of the hookers
grain so I'm making a nice blackish
green that I'm going to be putting in
the upper parts of the green bottle at
jazzy keV EBU 22 how would you suggest
getting started with selling your own
work um well actually I'm going to have
a Renae Christine from
richmombusiness.com/newbestie bowls even
craft fairs um you know posting your
work on your own personal Facebook page
so people you know can actually see it
because your your first sales are going
to be from people you know um if you if
you have kind of like a background if
you if you've gone to college for you
could approach galleries galleries at
least the ones in our area we're not
keen on representing people that have
known art school um but if you have been
art school you might be able to get some
representation from a gallery they
generally take 50% of your of your of
the price they sell it for but you know
50% if you can't you know if you can't
sell it then
they can you know it's kind of it's kind
of worth it um but I personally go with
a fair festival route hmm okay so while
these are drying so we have the we have
the really dark ones from there that are
being influenced by the background in
here and see I got brushstrokes in there
so late a little later on I'm going to
show you what I mean about wetting it
down and repainting it if you need to so
um so it looks more like this side so
don't worry about that if your
background looks like that this is very
liftable and nothing to be concerned
with there are some shadows in my red
bottle in in the blue bottles
reflections I'll show you here I'll show
you both on my first version and on the
photo so we want to put that in nooks
it's kind of pretty and interesting and
I'm going to go ahead and grab my
crimson see Danielle and ultramarine STI
Jesse ah no have you done to create your
own stamp video you mentioned last week
I have not done it yet it is I still
have that the big eraser on my table to
do it I've been I've had a lot of
projects I had to get done this week in
a sick chicken so I have not been that
productive unfortunately I'm just kind
of dabbing in a little bit of that um
crimson and ultramarine blue that was
slightly muddied with the darker mix and
I'm going to do ultramarine blue with
that darker mix for the shadows on that
bottle too on the bottles reflection
right out there at Mona Elle I got hot
pressed 140 pound dollar rowney
watercolor paper is that good um it's
probably a decent student grade I
haven't used daily rowney paper they
generally come up with like a lot of
kits around Christmas time and I think
they have probably a couple different
grades so not exactly sure on that I'd
say try it see how it works if you find
that you can't lift up colors it
probably doesn't have that much sizing
in it or if you find that it kills when
you're painting it these little balls of
fuzz you know then it's in it's not a
great paper that'd be better for maybe
just stamping on if you do any rubber
stamping Mona I'm not sure I know you're
a painter but in a few if you stamp
that'd be good for like techniques like
that paper cut of their paper crafts
okay
we're gonna do some more shadows in
these vases this is going actually quick
and I thought it was um oh you don't
have to stop every few minutes to help
your 10 students Oh
everyone did fun somebody do green
hookers green a little bit of the
ultramarine blue and I do have to say
thanks to all the chatters to being
patient with your questions I'm trying
to keep up as much as possible but I
have a small chat room window so I have
to kind of go back and make sure I catch
everybody so thank thanks everybody with
their patience and waiting to get these
questions answered yes although Sarah I
would not have able on show because
there's no way I could look at the chat
and attempt to do anything it would be
the most boring show ever me looking
here with like a chicken look on my face
I've been looking like the dumb chicken
upstairs my kitchen well Mary s oh I
don't know she didn't know if he'd said
before we did the chicken survived so
far so good oh my husband's getting very
tired of chicken and the limit in the
kitchen so a support chicken may have to
fight or flight pretty soon be very
deliberate with your shadows don't
second-guess yourself put the paint on
and move on do not allow yourself too
much time there to fart around on any of
those bottles and a little bit of the
rank your beverage that I was doing
great okay second second show I'm trying
to do my best here don't awesome how
about watching paint that one oh if you
want to add a little bit of a glow
something you can do is um actually this
is kind of fun but you don't feel like
you have to do this if this kind of
terrifies you don't do it but something
that I kind of like to do is to grab
some of the colors because these are
shiny into very reflective and they're
going to be influenced by the other
colors like here this green is sending a
shadow behind that bottle but you'll be
able to see the book through the bottle
at that so what I'm going to do is just
kind of wet an area here and it is going
to lift up so the paint underneath it is
going to be a little bit of skate a
little scary so you don't have to do
this but it's kind of fun to throw in a
little bit of a shadow even if you just
kind of DAB it in that mottled shadow in
the back
around and I like to just kind of maybe
throw in a little bit probably have to
wipe out a little bit of color on that
red one to be able to do the green so it
doesn't just automatically go Brown but
if you you know set some bottles up on
your windowsill or put you know some
bottles on the table and put a strong
lamp next to it so you can see how the
how the colors behave it's really fun
it's really interesting to paint you can
add a little yellow inside your red
bottle if you want to have kind of like
the feeling of a little bit of a glow
like sunlight glow hey Lindsey could you
do another painting tutorial with Ganzi
tombi I probably said that wrong no you
do so right ahoo those are very popular
paint right now with paper crafters you
can do this tutorial with the Gansey
Tambe it's just another brand there's
nothing like earth-shattering about them
I know a lot of people think kind of
like you know things get popular in the
crafts world and then everyone jumps on
board and or everybody thinks that this
is it's so much different than
everything else what a lot of times it
just you know it's just another another
type of watercolor come on a little more
yellow in that one so I just kind of
scrubbed out a little bit to add some in
and I need some more blue more darker
blue so blue + ultramarine I mean I'm
sorry also red blue + alizarin crimson
and add some of that in here Kym's m7
I'm getting a kick out of cinnamon she's
getting frustrated she so well these
guys I'm multitasking they're watching
they're watching her they're watching
you uh Karen B how do you clean the
inside of the palette when you are all
done with the paint on the outside just
wipe it off yeah just spritz it with
water and wipe it off that is another
nice thing about watercolor is very easy
to clean up yes not big on cleaning you
know that if you sell my kitchen like my
dirty kitchen for this chicken in the
middle of it well you also that you also
have children and
husband so yeah my husband's
self-sustaining it's the children and
the chicken and the dog and their muddy
feet
I know those furry paws me up poor dogs
dogs in the tale of woe they know they
are dogs and you have a really rough ace
is probably napping on the couch right
now as we're doing this oh sure but
she's Joey if the cat food dishes were
down her new thing has been to go late
almost right next to the cat dishes to
nap so she can't you know she's not
actually eating the cat food but she can
smell every morsel in the dish
she didn't dream about the cat oh that's
that's blower that's been her new thing
so we have to make her nap elsewhere
which then we get the look of sadness
now I have to take hazel with me if I go
like just to go down to the post office
or go pick up the kids because if I
leave her at home by herself she cleans
up get cat food oh it feels very a
disgusted and upset and you know just to
gross everybody out the fart dog farts
after eating cat oh oh pretty terrible
adding a little reflections of the red
bottle into both of the green and the
blue jean w says just eat the chicken
who does problem solved
oh my vegetarian I'm not Taylor thing
I'm a vegetarian I don't even eat eggs
and course vegan you're not vegetarian
you're vegan who is caring and I'm going
for the chicken most of the time yes I
actually did not want this batch of
chickens because I just knew I knew like
snowy trudging the snow where water
twice a day in the winter
hey speed you got any eggs I can steal
yeah we do
sweet I know you don't eat them yeah
and who else one of the kids doesn't eat
them actually know all the kids eat them
oh I like my kids do need one of the
kids as a vegetarian
Lyle is a vegetarian initiate a
vegetarian rice guess I thought for some
reason
no day holidays I'm going to take a
little bit of that up purple that I mix
the crimson plus blue and just a touch
of my mixed gray there and I'm going to
add some darkness to the edge of my
marble gonna help round it out gosh you
know we're almost done we just need to
the highlights but yeah sweet okay I'm
sorry do the highlights in a minute I
let's fix this because I can do that I
don't think I can I think I can do that
without disturbing anything I've done on
those bottles and that needs to dry so
let's uh let's get that done while
that's drying so if you've um since I've
done this background this is the fourth
time I've done this background so I know
how to fix it you're pro I'm a pro at
fixing see that's the thing it's like
you don't fail you just find one another
way that doesn't work you know until you
find the way that works for you so um so
at the beginning of the broadcast
somebody asked me why I chose these
colors and they were transparent and
they represented the colors in the
reference photo but also they were
liftable so look at this let me just
show you this look at that I could lift
and this is a soft brush if I use like
an oil painter brush I could lift it
more but it might damage my paper but
look at that I can lift that away that's
a really dark color that I mixed the
since burnt sienna and ultramarine are
sedimentary meaning instead of absorbing
instead of a sinking into the paper and
absorbing they tend to sit on top of the
paper because the pigment particles that
they're made of the lapis lazuli or
whatever the even the doesn't that
accused they use in the iron oxide in
the burnt sienna there's such large
pigment particles that they can't stay
in the paper they have to sit on top of
the paper so the water might absorb into
the paper but the pigment itself stays
on top so that makes it a sedimentary or
very liftable color generally a lot of
liftable colors are opaque but these
happen to be fairly transparent so it
can still render glass really well but
that gives us the option of being able
to lift back to get our highlights out
and also correct mistakes so here I'm
just going to make up another wash and
actually know what you should make up
your wash before you go in and
your background so that you don't have a
chance for it to dry on you but speedy
Gonzalez I think I'll be alright and I
used all that pain I squared it up too
and you also see how you use a lot more
paint if you work from the tube because
I squirted out pretty decent-sized gobs
of burnt sienna and ultramarine blue to
begin there and I used it all so you can
see by working from the palette you do
not waste so much and look at my mix
water my rinse water is filthy because
that's all wonderful pigment that just
went to waste in there but you kind of
when you are doing a big background like
this you kind of do need it I do like
the emgrand paints because um I bought
this set it was back when Tom's got
paint was open your board Penobscot oh
man I was a long time yeah I think it
was before it was before Jackson was
born yeah right because they close not
long after a seam or opened up yeah they
unfortunately unfortunately but they
that I bought that there because they
were 40% off list and then I was buy I
said I would if I buy every color except
for white and Grey's and black and and
he gave me even a better deal so so I
did so there now if I see any cut like
if I have a petal like that what I want
to do is wipe my brush off and just set
it in the puddle and lift it up and
that's going to get rid of any blooms so
any puddles it's a little easier to do
than a paper towel paper towel will lift
too much off um
dollar for a zombie I'm she's using kid
brushes right now for her watercolors
she doesn't want to buy a whole set if
you had to recommend one brush what
would you recommend I would recommend a
number 8 round um how is she begin if
it's if you're a beginner I would say go
with an aqua one or our majestic if
you're an intermediate painter I would
say go with a mimic or Princeton Neptune
and also Princeton Neptune makes a brush
called the cat's tongue which it gives
you kind of the properties all flat and
around together that's a really good one
too Danielle Tierney Tranter I want to
do color your own birthday cards next
year thought about is music about here
with watercolors with Gavin gel colors
on apatite ideas for adding a color
medium within a greeting card oh that's
really cool um you know
I think Kurt Pilon pierless would work
but I think it would be kind of it would
get kind of expensive um I think I would
take like a little piece of like yupo
paper which is a synthetic water I just
like drop my brush which was totally wet
on my painting and left all these little
spiders everywhere that's going to give
me a powerful tale of woe here and I
think said it was a ok because
apparently she's racing to catch up with
you oh okay um I think I would probably
just take me takes like a watercolor
pencil or intense block or maybe even
just like smudge a tiny little bit of
watercolor on a strip of yupo paper
because it will dry on there but you can
lift it completely off with a wet brush
and that's why would you make a little
strip palette of your just watercolors
like that I'm drawing this so we can do
our last layer which is highlights
lifting and highlights any other
questions
walking through not know mostly people
are talking about going purchase
somebody's definitely flat bow um you
know being inspired and several are
enjoying watching cinnamon attempt us of
you during this wonderful watercolor
story unless you they need to archive
that periscopes are gone in like 24
hours or 48 hours so uh showing up the
archive got so you can all enjoy that
for perpetuity alright basically just
need to make sure the bottles are dry
that can still be wet and can go on to
our final stages we are going to lift so
we need a fairly clean dry paper towel
and if you have it I strongly recommend
getting a hog brush and this is just a
like a it's like a number two royal
china brush hog bristles you can get
these at the dollar store any you know
kids Department you don't pay a lot of
money they'll last you a long time if
you have some of these for acrylic go
ahead and use it for watercolor it's not
going to hurt them I try not to borrow
my oil painting brushes for watercolor
because there could still be residual
oil in the brush and I don't want that
on my paper because oil paint will rot
paper that's why you have to gesso and
prime things when you use oil paints
because the oils will go through and rot
them so I just want to make sure that
it doesn't have oil on it and now I am
going to go in and lift so I just have a
wet brush and I'm scrubbing back and
forth that's removing my color pretty
successfully one more time and then I'm
going to blot Elizabeth killbride
Lindsay did you know that all individual
item coupons from Michael's a Seymour
and Joanne's are accepted in the other
stores too I just found this out and
have been working these deals for the
last few weeks
nice I actually didn't know that because
stereo store can a see more so she said
she let me know and the and I a see more
will they all have their own special
deals the the best thing about Joanne's
is you can use multiple coupons at least
in the ones up there you can you could I
could have like for Joanne's coupons as
long as they're different numbers and I
can have an AC more coupon and a Hobby

all um the cool thing about AC Moore is

policy where like it Joanne's when you
have a teaching you need to have your
school your school ID I don't teach at a
public school so I don't have that um so
but if I go to a seam or bring my pay
stub from the town of Warrington then
that's all they need and I can I can get
15% off and they take that off of
coupons and sale items at everything I
mean they're like crazy um
ac more also because as far as I know
Hobby Lobby and Joanne's does not offer
a military discount but AC more offers a
15% military discount that will come on
you can also use a coupon and just the
military discount will come off of sale
items as well um this last thing new
Joanne's and Hobby Lobby did not offer
military discount so for anybody out
there who is military family that's you
have an AC more nearby alright we don't
really go to Michael's because the
closest Michaels is about an hour and a

when you're shopping always check a GP
do you like soft pastels for still like
paintings
what fixative can be used um probably
the most the most popular fixative would
be krylon workable fixative
and I would use that if I had like
something that was really important but
if I I like to use fixatives but if I
had to and it was something that I
really wanted to last I would use
Kryolan however cheap old Aquanet works
awfully good like and I'll use that my
art journal um you want the cheapest
hair aerosol hairspray you can find
because they typically do not contain
the expensive um silicones and
conditioners the cheaper ones kind of
skimp on leave out so but that's what
you want you just want the shellac
basically Kristin Kay I'm sending my son
to a team or do they have discounts for
students last I knew they did not do
student discounts not even like art
student no they were doing it for a
while and it got to be a problem however
that was that was while I was still
working there that may have changed it
never hurts to ask
never hurts to ask a lot of times you
know at least in our story we would do
if someone asked about a discount or
something if we couldn't give him a
discount we would give him a coupon we
give him something if we couldn't give
them what they were our least I did I
was like oh here you go well yeah I mean
and um well I was buying like so many
canvases and so much paint one day and
the one said are you a teacher and I
said yeah and I said the I teach up a
program at the town library and she was
well we have a discount teacher's
discount do you ever use that and I
never had asked because I figured it was
only for public school teachers and they
were like you know just let me know when
you cash out and next time bring a pay
stub or something so you know in case
you don't have me is your your you know
cashier so yeah
uh Carol Moore do you ever watercolor
with an easel if so do you recommend a
field easel working on a flat surface
gets tiring I think honestly I would
recommend a couple books and prop your
work up because you need it to be flat
what you're drying or your paints going
to go I use an easel only for
demonstration purposes when I teach I
mean you may be better off like standing
when you work or sitting up high on a
barstool so you can kind of see your
your paper like I'm standing and my
paper is kind of like bellybutton high
and but when I said I also sit some my
paper is kind of belly button high so
I'm looking down so I lift it off all I
want to lift off and then I am going to
use some gouache for highlights and I
scored this out of my palette the other
day hopefully it's juicy enough um the
gouache is not something I keep on my
palette oh here's a little quick tip if
you've used up all the oils in your
palette you want to add a color that
you're only gonna use for a painting or
to take a little hot glue gun take a hot
glue gun and just make a temporary well
use a low setting so you don't note your
palate and just make yourself a little
weld that I had some Payne's gray in
there if I ever am in ease of Gray's
Payne's gray and I just need it for a
project and I did that and I actually
really liked having that kind of
temporary spot there alright so this is
the icing on the cake these are the
sprinkles on the cupcake you do not want
to overdo it that's right we love
sprinkles I love sprinkles so what we're
going to do is just kind this would be
the place where that is directly being
hit by our light source now my paint is
too wet and I don't know if you can kind
of see it's kind of beating up there
that is not what you want I don't know
if you can really tell with the webcam
but if you have your brush like that
it's way too wet just kind of set it on
a paper towel and then go back in and
try to load it up with this little water
as possible so I'm going on a dry dollop
of paint here so it should be pretty
easy to do and I'm going to make a
little sparkle there and just kind of
drag it down on top of the area I
already lifted so it just kind of gives
it that punch of color now up here I've
kind of lost some of my definition on
the neck of the bottle so I'm going to
try to bring it back here with my
highlights and you I mean if you have
something is really out of whack
honestly if you can just kind of kind of
approximate where it should be just give
it a little bit of a hint of where it
you can kind of get away with a lot with
glass because you have like shiny bits
and um and just kind of if you have a
good idea of where something should be
just kind of put in what you know and
you know forget about the rest a couple
little dots there a little streak from a
cast highlight help everyone's liking
this I hope because I have one student
come inside I almost didn't come to your
class because I thought you're doing
bottles it didn't look very interesting
people have there have been a couple
people are like oh I'm thinking bean
inspired trying paint some bottles
people are enjoying this very much so
good try to keep your um your highlight
lines very deliberate and sparse
remember it's just like it's just the
icing you know want too much icing on
the cake it ruins it sorry fleas on can
say I'm not a big frosting person so I
like a little frosting on my cake now I
can pull a little struggle cross rinse
my brush off and just drag that down so
I don't such a bright highlight on that
side because this is kind of like it's
kind of reflected I like I can tone down
any of these highlights with clear water
just kind of clean off my brush blot it
and then just paint over it and when it
dries it's going to be it's going to be
more transparent and also you may want
to clean your brush when you go from one
color to the next because you can end up
lifting up some color if you're paying
if your brush is too wet now if your
hand shakes I know a lot of you guys
have this problem I had this problem
after a couple cups of coffee or if I've
been painting for a long time if you can
like put your hand on your wrist or
maybe put like a Noah sturdy mug or
something you can set your arm on it can
really help you stay steady just give a
little streak Shannon Green I need to
try to shave YouTube thing do you
recommend it and does it boost your
views or can you tell um it really
YouTube really likes it when you do live
they you think I seem to get a lot more
um promotion of the video I know I get a
lot more engagement they I think they
promote channels who are doing a live a
lot more than channels that aren't doing
live that seems to be my
I experienced because like I did some
live ask crafters which even though some
of my audience didn't really care for
them as much as a pre-recorded and I can
understand because it's not going to be
as clear and crisp and there can be
timing issues but um as far as like add
performance and its views and watch time
the live shows did much better so I
think I'm going to call this done oh
maybe just couple of sparkles in that
blue one let's see Elizabeth
Kilbride Lindsey you inspired me every
day i watch your videos love your talent
you've helped me learn so much and I'm
very grateful to your offering your
videos to all of us

so sloppy I just kind of do block
letters that's right any other questions
pop in just get them 2015 okay I think I
can remove this because it's not really
wet at the edge so what you want to do
is look around your whole look of
yesterday's tea on it that was a
terrible housekeeper you're after but
you don't have
be a good housekeeper I'm not going to
tell you how many times I have we sold
cups oh yeah they can get funky okay
alright so what you want to do is I'd
like to use a palette knife if you don't
have a palette knife you could use a
butter knife don't use a sharp knife and
you find the gap there'll be a gap
somewhere where there is no more binding
in mines right here and I'm just going
to slide this palette knife in here and
gently and you should wait for your
paper to dry hopefully this wash is dry
back here you're just going to slide it
gently one of the reasons you don't want
to be wet is you might end up smearing
paint on the layers underneath on the
papers underneath but I really like
these I think they're worth over the
little extra money sometimes the last
couple sheets on your block might not
stay bound down on all four sides but um
I've had really good luck with them and
you can always tape those down they just
they do I wish I could tell you exactly
how much more they run versus a regular
one but like I know the Strathmore 400
and like canson montval have been
affordable saying there is perfectly
flat even with all that water we did in
the back lovely edges to that just come
out so nice yeah and so then the seal
for the pristine sheet underneath and
this is the the brand I'm using
Strathmore watercolor I really love the
arches brand but it's expensive like
this you'll probably find at Jerry's
probably about ten or fifteen dollars
whereas arches would be Jerry's pressure
probably about thirty regular price
would be probably at sixty so you know
if you need the affordable yeah yeah
absolutely affordable and who doesn't
need a fork oh yeah yeah seriously
especially but you know what it makes
you paint more then it's so it's worth
it it's you know worth the go with a
cheaper one if you're gonna paint more
so this was one we did today this is the
one I did before um you know just
concentrating and not jibber jabbering
so you know you can do a little better
of a job if you're not caught if you're
if you're concentrating you're not
jibber jabbering but I'm pleased with
both of these I hope you guys are too
and I hope you give it a try do we have
any final questions before we sign off
tonight okay or have you ever used
medical tape to tape down the edges you
know sometimes I use medical tape the
fabric kind to hinge my work into the
mat
not for taking down the edges of my
paper I usually absorb it what it
probably would absorb some of the paint
wouldn't it because I think it would I
don't think you get a crisp edge this
works great this is just um painters
tape from the hardware store not very
expensive a little bit more than masking
tape but you could leave it tape to your
paper longer without it becoming
permanently stuck but I mean I use
dollar tree masking tape too if I'm just
going to you know tape pull up the tape
that day I hate to waste I hate seeing
all that tape I don't I'd rather buy the
block just I hate seeing all that tape
alone the trash all right and all right
